THE PEDAGOGY OF THE POETIC BODY
8 June, 2020 → 15 August, 2020 - Boulder, Colorado USA
directed by
GIOVANNI FUSETTI
Welcome to a unique pedagogic celebration, a quest for further knowledge and understanding of Movement-Based Theatre and the Art of teaching it.
The training addresses theatre practitioners who have already experienced “the Journey” of Lecoq's pedagogy in the role of students, are active professionally in the art of teaching, and feel the desire and need to refine their art and co-create an intensive learning time and space, in order to work on their pedagogic practice and develop their style, their skills and their meta-skills.
This pedagogic training program emerges from my desire and urgency to integrate, in a unique and coherent form, my pedagogic process of practice, research and experimentation of the last 25 years. This process has followed a highly multi-disciplinary path: theatre art, pedagogy, education, somatic psychology, awareness practices and ecological sciences.
Theatre is PLAY. Imitation, transposition and re-invention of the world. It's a very ancient human expression, based on the pleasure of playing, the awareness of the dynamics of life and the rigor of technique.
It's a space where life is represented, celebrated and transformed through the body. This process requires phenomenological passion and curiosity in the observation of the mystery and wonder of life in movement. The Actor-Creator is a poet who enters the journey of discovering the world and manifests the world’s beauty through poetical forms. She is the poet of ecstasy. His body is the body of the world. In this journey the Actor-Creator encounters herself in a new state of self awareness and transforms his inner world into a conscious instrument for poetry.
The Poetic Body is a collective experience.
A fundamental reference is the Theatre Pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq. But many are the sources that have nourished and inspired it: Gestalt Therapy, western Bioenergetic Analysis and the work of Wilhelm Reich, Taoism, Process Work, Archetypal psychology, Theatre of the Oppressed, as well as Ecology. Each of these paths has gifted the work with very specific and precious ingredients, making the theatre process and its pedagogy a delicious recipe for a lot of different palates.

I have created this pedagogic training program as the synthesis of my personal, artistic and pedagogic experience. It is based on the principle that pedagogy is not only about the content and the method of teaching. It also requires the work of the teacher on her/himself, in order to refine her/his awareness of the pedagogic relationship with the students and integrate the emotional aspects of the pedagogic process.
In other words, as the students go through a form of initiation during their learning process, so the teacher can be initiated into a specific knowledge that is flowing in the background, or “backstage” of the teaching process.
In order to manifest its deep nature of an initiation process, the training will proceed on two parallel levels. Theatre Pedagogy and Personal Awareness.
The role of the participants will be more the role of pedagogic apprentices than the role of students. Pedagogy is the art of accompanying students along the journey. So, the purpose of the program will be to nurture and stimulate the pedagogic voice of each “apprentice”.
The program proposes a review of the whole journey of Movement Theatre, in the form articulated and taught at the Helikos school in Florence, with a comprehensive analysis of the structure of the training, and of the different connections between its various ingredients. Its architecture is the integration of the Journey taught by Jacques Lecoq at his school in Paris, which I received in the 90s, and my experiences directing Kiklos and Helikos School and many trainings worldwide over the last 25 years.
In parallel to the review, the program proposes a permanent teaching workshop in which the participants will be practicing their teaching art, using the group as a field of experience and experimentation, and then working on the feedback received both from the group and from myself in the role of supervisor.
A pedagogue is able to instantly process a vast body of information, perceptions, emotions and knowledge that is flowing at different levels, all interconnected and all at the same time. Poetic, technical, symbolic, cultural and emotional level. The pedagogue works and plays constantly searching for the awareness of these interconnections. This requires a particular state of consciousness, which I call the Pedagogic State.
The pedagogic state is a state of awareness of awareness. It’s not a static concept, but a dynamic process, and it involves practical experience, emotional presence and intellectual understanding.
Practically, all through the training, we will keep focused on what is happening within our awareness and how the pedagogue can reach a deeper understanding of her/his own process as well as the students'. This will involve theoretical and experiential classes, group work and individual coaching. As well as some specific learning on how to accompany students as they dive into the “wetlands” of raw emotions, in order to dig out poetic treasures.
The training will unfold in a combination of theory and practice. The fundamental focus is the unfolding of the Pedagogic State, a state in which the teacher operates as a catalyser of the learning process. This state involves multiple levels of awareness and it is a permanent state of creation.
The program will be structured around the pedagogic analysis of the Helikos school program, in a combination of different types of classes:
